The Power of A Great Hair Cut

"Your hair is your co-star in life," says celebrity hairstylist Julien Farel, who has coiffed the strands of the elite for decades at his namesake salons across the country. And will continue that legacy at his soon-to-open (March 2014) flagship salon, Julien Farel Restore Salon & Spa, tucked inside the newly renovated Lowes Regency in NYC, known for their 'power breakfast'. "Your hair is the first thing people notice when you walk into a room and can say a lot about who you are and your personality," says Farel. So, how does one get 'power hair' exactly? The mane man behind the concept shares all.

Harper's Bazaar: What is 'power hair' and why does one want it?
Julien Farel: ‘Power hair’ gives you the competitive edge to perform at your highest level to conquer the demanding city of New York.  I work with some of the most powerful people—from power brokers to celebrities to New York's heavy hitters. And for all of them, confidence is key when doing business. When a client sits in my chair, I speak candidly with them about what they are looking for or trying to achieve. I strive to bring out those subtle intricacies and give them a bold cut that is based on the architecture of their face and silhouette, and reveals their personality.
As for how to get it, you have to take a risk and give your hair a new look. ‘Power hair’ is completely customizable and personal for each client, breaking down the barriers that stop them from achieving their ideal hair.  This resonates with everyone—men and women.
HB: Is there an essential element to obtaining 'power hair'?
JF: It begins with a healthy scalp and hair, which gives you the perfect canvas to start with styling, cutting, coloring, or anything else. To jumpstart the process, look for haircare products that work to intensely hydrate and deliver nourishing ingredients to the scalp like the ones in my anti-aging haircare line, specifically my hero product, the Restore treatment, which I named the new salon after, and comes in various formulas for every hair type and need. It's a first-of-its-kind all-in-one product that is a cleanse, treat and condition formula that ensures long-lasting, radiant hair that lasts a lifetime.
HB: How can a woman tap into what specifically works for her?
JF: For me, it’s all about customizing a woman's hair based on their face shape and proportions, taking into consideration hair texture as well. Coarse hair usually needs to be worn longer and fine hair should be worn shorter and layered if you want any sort of body.
Also, I always aim to match someone's hair with their personality. Everyone needs to own their ‘power hair’ with confidence. Individually, people can switch up their hairstyles daily to boost a particular personality trait for the day.  Whether it is a boardroom sleek style, a flowing and soft style for a day at the park, or a sporty style when trying new activities, different hair styles can have an effect on how you perform—and are perceived—in all those settings.
As for what women can do themselves, it's important to develop a hair timeline. It takes time to perfect your ‘power hair’ and there may be different stages to get through in order to arrive at your final desired look. By mapping out where the your hair is now and where you want it to be in the long run, helps transition smoothly into your ideal complementary style.
